Telecommunications and Computer Networks
Core aspects of healthcare delivery are driven by interconnectivity through telecommunications and data communications within the organization and with the world. With interconnectedness in the healthcare setting comes the essential concepts of information security, network configurations, and optimal network solutions within real-world constraints. The culmination my education and coursework in this topic is a final project encompassing the design of the local area and wide area network
architecture, security, capacity, and future growth plans, budget, and human resource requirements for a geographically diverse, four site company. This project requires the consideration of the local requirements of a single site within the context of the larger corporate system’s networking needs. Examples of component requirements include the use of virtual local area networks to allow for secure user groups to exchange data within the single site, the use of encrypted frame relay technology with private virtual circuits in a partial mesh topology to allow for the requisite amount of redundancy while being cost effective, and firewall placements to protect data.
The healthcare system environment requires smooth, consistent, and robust interconnectivity for patient data exchange, communications amongst providers, and a multitude of other data streams. All of these data are crucial in providing an efficient healthcare environment that offers high quality care to each patient. The health information exchange model is a valid current use case of networking principles and achievement of the triple aim*, bound by the demands of patient data security, infrastructure for data exchange, and economic sustainability considerations.
*Triple aim: (1) Improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction); (2) Improving the health of populations; and (3)Reducing the per capita cost of health care.
